Family Promise of Greater Roanoke empowers homeless families with children to achieve sustainable independence through a community-based response.
The vision of Family Promise is a community in which every family has a home, a livelihood, and the chance to build a better future.
We are a network of 31 congregations and over 1,000 volunteers who provide temporary housing and meals for families with children. We work with 4 families at a time (14 people). We provide full-time case management to assist families in addressing and overcoming causes of homelessness and creating goals of employment, housing, education in their return to independence.
An unimaginable number of families are at risk of eviction; experts estimate that between 20-30 million American families may face eviction in the coming year. The COVID-19 pandemic illustrates how important a home is to the health and well-being of a family, and especially of a child. For the first time, some families are unable to pay rent. Because of the pandemic, families already living paycheck to paycheck feel stable housing pushed further from their grasp.
The Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) National Eviction Moratorium protects families from eviction through March 31, 2021. But the rent will eventually be due.
Across the country, Family Promise Affiliates, including here in the Roanoke Valley are working to keep families healthy, safe, and in their homes.
